A former officer at the Consular Section of the Moldovan Embassy in Romania, accused of abuse of office, made a new installment, of 305,000 lei, towards paying for the damage that his actions were estimated to have caused. According to the National Anticorruption Center, he has paid a total of over 1.5 million lei so far.
The officer came on the NAC’s radar in 2020 after it was reported that he habitually pocketed the fees paid by Moldovan citizens for converting Moldovan driver’s licenses to Romanian ones.
Per the indictment, from January 2017 to August 2020, the man dishonestly retained 2,566 such fees, each worth €30+€5, or about €90,000 in total.
The suspect was indicted on 1 December 2022, and the very next day he made the first installment towards repaying the damage, of more than a million lei.
