Parliament’s legal commission to launch selection of new CEC members

The Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities will initiate the procedure for choosing candidates for the posts of member of the Central Election Commission, in accordance with the Election Code, following the expiry of the mandates of the previous CEC members, IPN reports.

According to Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, the term in office of all the CEC members expired before the snap parliamentary elections of July 11, 2021, on June 17, 2021. In accordance with the Election Code, the Commission’s mandate was extended for 90 days, which is until September 15, 2021. Therefore, the procedure for selecting candidates for the new makeup of the Commission needs to be
started as a matter of urgency.

The Central Election Commission consists of nine members. One member is named by the President of the Republic of Moldova, while eight members are appointed by Parliament by ensuring the proportional representation of the majority and the opposition. The nominal composition of the Commission is confirmed by Parliament decision, by a majority of votes of MP. Later, the CEC members take an oath in a Parliament sitting.
