Over 50 images with children from the villages of Moldova were presented within the frameworks of the exhibition entitled “Childhood without violence”, which was launched in the hallway of Moldova’s Parliament on December 6. Deputy speaker of the Parliament Maria Postoico emphasized the fact that this exhibition is a good occasion to think about the best ways to educate a child and to acknowledge that beating a child is not the best education but it is an act of violence. “Moldova confronts with enough violence, especially violence against children. It is time to say “stop” to violence, because it destroys the children’s right to an appropriate future”, deputy chairman of the Parliament added. Ray Virgilio Torres, representatives of UNICEF to Moldova, underlined the necessity of thinking over the education methods provided to a child and to acknowledge the fact that the violence is not a process of education. “It is not necessary to be violent in order to educate our children and this is not an element children need in order to be educated”, the cited source stated. Daniela Popescu, head of the Centre for prevention of abuse against children mentioned about the fact that the violence applied to children is in many cases resulting in real tragedies and urged the society to react against child violence. The exhibition “Childhood without violence” presents only a part of the photos made by a group of youths aged 18-20, who travelled throughout Moldova during August-September 2006 in order to grasp the life and feelings of children living in the villages. The images do not show children who were exposed to violence and violence scenes. However, the clear anti-violence message is due to the extremely suggestive gestures and eyes of the children. The photos had been made within the frameworks of the National Campaign “Childhood without violence”.
