A cooperation program for combating disinformation and promoting democracy, called “Triangle for Democracy”, was launched in the Moldovan Parliament. During the inaugural meeting, lawmakers, representatives of civil society and development partners discussed how to prevent and combat disinformation online.
Moldovan Speaker Igor Grosu noted that manipulation and misinformation are dangerous and toxic for the whole society. “To combat these phenomena, we urgently need both improved legislation and effective institutions. We must protect our infospace and strike a balance between freedom of expression and combating disinformation”, he was quoted in a press release.
According to MEP Dragoș Tudorache, coordinator of parliamentary democracy support activities in the Republic of Moldova, disinformation is becoming a major problem because it affects society and people’s lives. “I would like in our discussions to see models that have invested in effective tools to combat this phenomenon”, said the MEP.
“I hope that this exchange of experience in the European context, as well as the legislative initiatives that we have to secure our information space, will help us identify solutions for this problem”, said MP Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, chair of the Commission for Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sports and Media.
The “Triangle for Democracy” program is part of the activities under the Cooperation Memorandum between the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and the European Parliament, which was signed last year.
