Parliament votes in favor of opening FAO Representative Office in Moldova

The MPs voted for the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of Moldova and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the setting up of a FAO Representative Office in Moldova, IPN reports.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Gheorghe Gaberi said that by its activities in Moldova, the FAO provides assistance in working out, monitoring and assessing strategies in agriculture and implements projects in accordance with the national sustainable agricultural development priorities. The opening of the representative office will help strength and extend the relations of partnership and cooperation with this organization.

The representative office will also facilitate the management of the FAO information and consultancy activities and activities to promote the development and modernization of the agricultural sector. Currently, the FAO projects under implementation in Moldova include projects to improve the capacity to remove dangerous chemical products from the former Soviet area, to develop the seed sector of Moldova in connection with climate change and to reduce the risk of disasters in 2011-2013.

The Ministry of Agriculture promoted the initiative to create a FAO Representative Office in Moldova and to strengthen the partnership relations with this organization during three years. Moldova joined the FAO in 1995. The organization was created to combat poverty and famine in the world by promoting agricultural development, improving nutrition and ensuring food safety.
