The Parliament of Moldova considers that the developments in Kosovo defy the fundamental norms of the international law and directly contribute to separatism – one of the main dangers of the XXI century. They can also lead to the escalation of tension not only in the Balkans and in the whole Europe, but in a number of regions of the world, says a statement unanimously approved by the Moldovan MPs on February 22, Info-Prim Neo reports. This danger can be combated only by joint international efforts, basing on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the independent states, through the productive cooperation of the international organisations and the entire international community, the statements reads. The Parliament of Moldova expresses its deep concern over the proclamation of independence by Kosovo and considers that this is a serious violation of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity that runs counter to the international norms. At the same time, the legislature expresses its firm conviction that the reserves of the peaceful and constructive dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina have not been used up and not all the possibilities of beneficially influencing the situation in Kosovo of the international community and international organisations have been explored. The Parliament considers that the future of Kosovo province and of the Republic of Serbia resides in the general-European prospect that can remove the tension in the region, ensure economic and political stability and civic peace and guarantee the observance of the human rights and freedoms, the statement concludes. The statement was formulated by a group of MPs set up at the Parliament’s meeting of February 21. Kosovo’s parliament unanimously endorsed a declaration of independence from Serbia, in a historic session on February 17. Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci promised a democracy that respected the rights of all ethnic communities. Kosovo’s independence is backed by the United States and a part of the Europeans states. Russia and other EU member states, including Romania and Spain, said they will not recognise Kosovo. On February 18, the Moldovan Government issued a statement saying that the possible recognition of Kosovo by a number of UN member states arouses concern in Moldova. Though the Kosovo problem is unique by content, such a settlement formula represents not only a violation of Serbia’s territorial integrity, but also a serious factor that destabilises the situation in Europe, a dangerous stimulant to separatist activity in all the conflict zones, the Government of Moldova considers.
