Moldova’s Parliament is convinced that the Transnistrian conflict and all the disagreements must be settled exclusively by political and peaceful methods, by observing the democratic principles and values and the basic rights and fundamental freedoms of the people living on the two banks of the Nistru River, IPN reports.
According to the text of the statement adopted by the legislature on June 21, the MPs consider that the whole negotiating process must be permanent in character, constructive and consistent. The unilateral actions of any kind and origin, including those aimed at legalizing any border inside the sovereign state Moldova, contribute to the undermining of the settlement process, the escalation of tensions and the defiance of the exciting settlement mechanisms, hinder the work of the group of military observers, and affect the existing peacekeeping system and the settlement process.
The parliamentarians say that avoiding discussing aspects concerning the comprehensive resolution of the dispute and addressing political and security issues in the political talks affects the discussions on secondary matters and shows unwillingness to find a viable solution that can contribute to agreeing a special legal status for the Transnistrian region.
The legislative body reasserts its commitment to promote the confidence building measures so as to contribute to the elimination of suspicions and to the solving of acute problems faced by the people living on both banks of the Nistru. The MPs who voted the statements call on the representatives of the sides involved in the talks in the 5+2 format to have a dialogue on all the problems concerning public order and security and to refrain from actions that would undermine the confidence between the two banks and would negatively affect the negotiating process.
Parliament calls on the international partners involved in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process to make sustained effort to normalize the situation in the security zone. The authorities call on the people living on the two banks of the Nistru to be calm and not to respond to challenges, no matter where they come from, and reiterate that they will not allow the escalation of the situation.
The statement was voted on June 21 after the legislative body held debates behind closed doors for two days.
