The MPs are to take a decision as regards the restoration of the VAT of 8% in the agricultural sector by this weekend. Alexandru Slusari, chairman of the National Federation of Employers in Agriculture and Food Industry, has told IPN that Deputy Speaker Adrian Candu in a meeting promised the farmers that the issue will be examined in Parliament on July 19.

Alexandru Slusari informed the official that the situation in agriculture is now more difficult than last year as the people overcame a severe drought, but remained without capital. The prices started to fall, as every season, and a heavier tax burden will ruin many producers.

The VAT in agriculture was 8% until January 1, 2013, when it was raised to 20%, but 12% was to be refunded within 30 days. Following amendments made by the legislature in April, 12% remain in farmers’ accounts for modernizing the business. The farmers said yet that the formula for calculating VAT is very difficult and demanded that the VAT of 8% be restored.
