Parliament spent 1.5m lei on translating legislation into or from Russian

In 2016 Parliament spent 1.5 million lei on translating and editing draft laws into or from the Russian language. The information was presented by the legislative body’s Secretariat at the request of Liberal MP Alina Zotea, IPN reports.

The response says ten public servants work in the Editing Section of the General Parliamentary Documents Division. These include typists, translators and editors who translate and edit bills included in legislative procedure, documents and other accompanying materials from or into Russian. A sum of 1.5 million lei was allocated paying salaries to these public servants in 2016.

“The poorest country in Europe spent 1.584.714 lei on translating and editing drafts laws included in legislative procedure into or from the Russian language at a time when we have unrepaired schools and kindergartens and hospitals that do not meet patients’ needs, while the living standards of a large part of the population is under the minimum subsistence level,” Alina Zotea says in a comment on a social networking site.
