Parliament sets fines for linguistic imbalance in adverts

The legislative body, at the suggestion of the Liberal lawmakers, decided to penalize the economic entities that post advertisements in which the texts in Russian are written with larger letters than those in Romanian or which have no texts in Romanian, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The domination of Russian to the detriment of the official language creates a linguistic imbalance. Our settlements are full of advertisements, announcements, and notices in Russian. Thus, the right of the majority Romanian speaking population is grossly violated,” MP Valeriu Munteanu in the last sitting of Parliament. The Liberals proposed that the fines for private initials should be 400 to 3 000 lei, while for legal entities – 6 000 to 10 000 lei. The bill was passed by a majority of votes in the first reading.
