Parliament may set date of presidential elections Thursday

The legislative body is expected to fix the date of the presidential elections on February 23. Speaker Marian Lupu’s proposal to hold the elections on March 15 was included in the agenda of the sitting. The head of the Liberal-Democratic faction Valeriu Strelet has told Info-Prim Neo that the proposal will be examined depending on the progress made in identifying a candidate for the presidency. He said that he does not know if the Council of the Alliance for European Integration will come together today and if they will meet with the leader of the Socialists Igor Dodon. Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu said that the Council may convene in the evening of February 22. “We said we are ready to meet every day. We are waiting for invitations from the PDM, which holds the Council’s presidency. We know nothing about the possible presidential candidates, but according to the criteria put forward by us there must be more than four or six candidates,” stated Valeriu Munteanu, adding that the leaders of the ruling alliance will discuss between them and then with Igor Dodon. The PDM and PLDM are in favor of holding the presidential elections on March 15. The PL said they will not vote for until a suitable candidate is found. According to press reports, there were identified two candidates for the presidency – Minister of Health Ion Ababii and former deputy governor of the National Bank Veronica Bacalu.
