Parliament hosts exhibition centering on 100 years of proclamation of independence of Czechoslovakia

Photos showing two important periods in the history of Czechoslovakia were displayed at an exhibition mounted in the hall of the Parliament Building. The exhibition was organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of Czechoslovakia and will continue until November 25, IPN reports.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Valeriu Giletski said the history of the former Czechoslovakia, as that of the Republic of Moldova, includes the fall of an empire. He mentioned the year 1918, when World War I ended, the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the year 1968, when a liberalization and reform program was launched. “It is an exhibition in memory of those events, which familiarizes us with the history of Czechoslovakia,” stated the MP.

The Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Moldova Zdeněk Krejčí said the anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of Czechoslovakia continues to be celebrated even if this was divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. The Czechs and the Slovaks consider Czechoslovakia is the foundation based on which two states developed.

Slovakia’s Ambassador in Chisinau Dušan Dacho said the existence of Czechoslovakia was marked by the two world wars and by the political system of the region. The period witnessed the fall of empires and the democratization of the countries.

The exhibition shows the founders of Czechoslovakia - university professor T. G. Masaryk, astronomer and general of the French army of Slovak origin M. R. Stefanik and minister of foreign affairs and the second president of the Republic of Czechoslovakia E. Beneș – and the results achieved by Czechoslovakia in the period between the two world wars: appearance of the Skoda and Tatra cars, Jawa motorcycles, Bata brand and the nylon for making women’s stockings.

The exhibit focuses on the period of the 1960s, when Czechoslovakia was led by the Communist Party that came to power in 1945. Being dissatisfied with the state of affairs in the country, the Czechs and the Slovaks launched a process to reform Czechoslovakia and this was completed in 1968 with the replacement of the administration of the Communist Party. Since then all the taken measures led to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993.
