Parliament holds solemn sitting dedicated to 30th anniversary of adoption of Constitution

The Parliament’s solemn sitting dedicated to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution is underway. The event was opened with the parade of the Guard of Honor and the playing of the state anthem. In the hall, there are MPs, ministers, former heads of state and ex-MPs who took part in the meeting of July 29, 1994. Speaker Igor Grosu in his speech said that this anniversary day is an important moment to reflect on the principles and values that formed the basis for the adoption of the Constitution and that continue to form the foundation of society, IPN reports.

“Today we celebrate the Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. It has been 30 years since the adoption of the supreme law of the country, which regulates our public life and the existence of each individual, which unites people around a common goal – the safe life of citizens in a prosperous country, in a sovereign, unitary and indivisible state, a state with the rule of law in which justice is functional and the fundamental human rights are above everything,” stated Igor Grosu.

The Speaker noted that all identity markers – language, history, tradition, culture and religion – prove that the Moldovans are Europeans and have a European vocation. According to him, the Republic of Moldova as a state maintains the same aspirations and after October 20, this desire of European integration will be introduced into the country’s fundamental law with the citizens’ vote.

“The future of our country is European and the development model of our country cannot be other than European. In the name of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and these values, we must continue our European path chosen by all of us. Let’s be firm in this choice and let’s stand together as a unitary and indivisible state,” said Igor Grosu.

The solemn sitting is attended by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, senators from Romania, members of the Constitutional Court, the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, heads of state institutions and authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Moldova and of the academic community.

The Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova is marked annually on July 29. The supreme law was adopted by Parliament on July 29, 1994 and entered into force on August 27, 1994.
