Parliament extends terms of Corjova local councillors and mayor

The Parliament, on Thursday, December 6, extended the terms of office of Corjova’s local councillors and mayor until there is an adequate environment to hold democratic elections in the settlement, but not later than the date of general local elections in 2011. The Parliament adopted this decision as a result of the failed attempts to carry out elections in this settlement on June 3 and June 17, 2007, when the Transnistrian separatist forces obstructed their progress. MP Dumitru Diacov stated that the Parliament should oblige the Government to enable elections in Cojova, as there are several ways of doing that. At the same time, the deputy argued that the draft passed in first reading is stimulating the impudence of the separatist regime. At the same sitting, the Parliament rejected a motion by MPs Gheorghe Susarenco and Ion Plesca, who proposed amending the Law on Local Public Administration by introducing the provision that the terms of office of local councillors and mayors may be extended if it is impossible to hold elections.
