Parliament extended the state of emergency for another 60 days, starting on April 5. The measure was adopted by 61 votes of the Action and Solidarity Party, at the proposal of the Government, as the Bloc of Communists and Socialists voted against.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean told Parliament that “the unjust and inhumane war that Russia is waging in Ukraine rages on, and this fact has serious consequences in the region, including in Moldova”.
“We must understand that the extension of the state of emergency is a necessary constitutional tool, because we are still facing the elements of a hybrid war of Russia against the Republic of Moldova, which is facilitated in one way or another by the group ‘for theft and war’. They have a very clear mission: to destabilize the situation and create chaos here”, declared Recean.
The prime minister added that the risks related to electricity supply still persist, given that there is not enough production capacity in the country, while in neighboring Ukraine, Russia is bombing the energy infrastructure.
Socialist Vasile Bolea criticized the extension, saying that the state of emergency has not been helpful in keeping consumer prices in check. According to him, it only helps those in government sign questionable contracts and spend money, including foreign funds, in a non-transparent fashion by exceeding their peacetime authority.
The current state of emergency was first introduced on February 24 of last year, when the war in Ukraine broke out, and has been extended repeatedly since.
