Representatives of a number of environmental nongovernmental organizations requested Parliament to adopt the law on access to information about the environment. In a news conference at IPN, Natalia Zamfir, who is a member of the NGO “Eco-Lex”, said the bill was drafted in accordance with the provisions of the Association Agreement between the EU and Moldova and the government is obliged to fulfill the assumed commitments.
Natalia Zamfir noted that the law on access to information, which is a general law, refers to transparency in the decision-making process and does not stipulate how to ask for information about the environment and which information must be provided mandatorily. The procedure for reporting violations of the right to obtain information about the environment is not specified.
To attract foreign investments to carry out environmental activities, a legal framework worked out in accordance with the EU standards is needed, said the representative of “Eco-Lex”. “Without a law on access to information about the environment, we will not obtain support and investments,” stated Natalia Zamfir.
She also said that the access to information is a guarantee for ensuring everyone’s right to a healthy environment and concrete actions are needed in this respect. Therefore, they call on Parliament to adopt the law on access to information about the environment as swiftly as possible.
