The legislative body adopted a Declaration on the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. The document states that only the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union will ensure the country’s future as a sovereign, neutral, integral and democratic state, and the irreversible path of European integration and accession is the Republic of Moldova’s national priority project, IPN reports.
In the Declaration, the MPs call on the whole society, including all the political forces, to show unity and solidarity in strengthening the political and social dialogue in the name of the national interest and strategic objective – the Republic of Moldova’s integration and accession to the European Union.
The document notes that the European Union, for decades, has been a reliable partner of the country, selflessly providing logistical and financial support to solve the Republic of Moldova’s multiple internal problems. Also, thanks to the generous support from the EU and the member states, the Republic of Moldova overcame the crisis caused by the COVID pandemic and also the energy crisis in the winter of 2022-2023.
It also stipulates that the European integration will facilitate civic cohesion of society, ensure the Republic of Moldova’s transition to sustainable economic development and enhance state capacities to promote effective social policies.
In this connection, the Parliament asks the Government to take all the necessary measures to ensure the accession to the European Union, as well as to strengthen the state institutions involved in negotiations. Through the declaration, the MPs call on the Republic of Moldova’s to unite for a peaceful and European future of the country.
“The European Union is a territory of peace. It was created as a peace project that put an end to wars in Europe, and its creative energies were no longer directed towards destruction and aggression, but towards prosperity and peaceful development among peoples,” reads the Declaration.
The document was adopted by the votes of 54 MPs. When the draft was debated, the group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists wasn’t in the assembly hall. They left the hall in protest after the parliamentary majority gave a first reading to the bill to pilot postal voting for Moldovans in the U.S. and Canada.
The Republic of Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the EU in 2014. On March 3, 2022, the Moldovan authorities signed the country’s application for EU membership. The European Union on June 23, 2022 granted the EU candidate status to the Republic of Moldova. On December 14, 2023, the European Council decided to open negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the EU.
