Parents who abandon children will be held criminally accountable

The persons who leave their children without supervision will be liable to criminal punishment. A legislative initiative that ensures the protection of children against abandonment was registered with the Parliament’s Standing Bureau on February 11, Info-Prim Neo reports. The initiative with amendments to the Criminal Code was put forward by Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici. According to a communiqué from the Liberal Democratic Party, of which Liliana Palihovici forms part, abandonment is the most serious form of negligence of children. “This phenomenon becomes something ordinary in Moldova and is due to the too mild legislation. This initiative aims to contribute to the maintenance of good relations between parents and children,” said Liliana Palihovici. The amendments institute punishments for those who abandon, drive away or leave without support their children, exposing them to physical or moral suffering; who intentionally do not maintain their children, in accordance with the law; who deliberately do not pay the child maintenance set by the court during five months.
