Parent migration affects children's mental health

The parents' departure abroad causes numerous psychical and behavioral problems in children. They often become introverts. Sometimes, the children whose parents are abroad decided to commit suicide as they feel lonely, said the Working Group for Monitoring the Child Rights in Moldova, which conducted a survey titled “The child's right no to be separated from parents”. The results of the survey were presented in a conference on May 6, Info-Prim Neo reports. The 25 children who form part of the group had worked on the monitoring report during two months. They surveyed 59 children from different settlements aged between 11 and 17. One of the members of the group, Lidia Criciu from Sangerei town, said the children whose parents work abroad often abandon school or miss classes as they are not stimulated to go to school. “Some of them spend the money sent by their parents on activities that are not always beneficial to them. Many children have to look after the elder brothers and sisters, the animals and do not have time to attend the school,” she said. Besides the right to a family, such children's rights as to play, to opinion, to supervision and to support are also violated. Sabin Cernovat from Briceni town said the children are discredited and their opinion is not taken into account. “Some of the parents go abroad without saying goodbye to their children, who become aggressive and introverts,” he said. The commission for social protection, health and family examined the problems faced by the children whose parents are abroad, said the commission's chairwoman Liliana Palihovici. A study revealed that the number of cases of suicide among such children rose two times. Therefore, the commission decided to ask the Government, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance to analyze the possibility of instituting psychological units in schools so that the children benefit from psychological assistance. Cezar Gavriliuc, the head of the Information and Documentation Center on Child Rights, stressed that the children of the monitoring group aim to sensitize the public authorities to the fact that these children also have rights, have their opinion and they should be consulted when decisions concerning them are taken. The 25 children of the Working Group for Monitoring the Child Rights in Moldova took part in the 11th workshop where they presented their conclusions concerning the observance and violation of the children's rights. The group was created in July 2008.
