The overwhelming victory won in the snap parliamentary elections is the biggest accomplishment of the Party of Action and Solidarity in 2021. However, the period after the elections wasn’t at all favorable to the current government, said political commentators from Chisinau. According to them, the pandemic and energy crises seriously affected the government’s image. At the same time, Romanian sociologist Dan Dungaciu said the prosecution service’s incapacity to complete the cases that feature the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon is a failure of the Moldovan law enforcement agencies, IPN reports.
Dan Dungaciu noted the perpetuation of the cases that involve ex-President Igor Dodon by the law enforcement bodies is a blow to the image of the government that in the election campaign promised to fight corruption and to reform the justice sector. The absence of an end result in these cases shows the incapacity to reform the justice system.
“In the Republic of Moldova, there is no political opposition. There is façade opposition. There was practically no opposition to what has happened in the Republic of Moldova. One of the paradoxes seen in Bucharest is that the opposition chief Igor Dodon travels freely through the Republic of Moldova even if the largest part of the election campaigns focused on episodes involving Plahotniuc and Dodon. In what European country or country with European pretensions can someone imagine that a former President who sat at a table with the most corrupt person is not asked about the consequences of those discussions? We see the timidity of the responsible bodies of the Republic of Moldova to target the only Moțoc’s head that remained in the Republic of Moldova,” Romanian sociologist Dan Dungaciu stated in the talk show “Moldova’s Live” on the public TV channel.
For their part, Moldovan political commentators said the historical score gained in the July 11 elections is the biggest accomplishment of the ruling party. However, the crises faced by Moldova swiftly erode the image of PAS.
“The favorable wind blowing in the sails of the boat of PAS and Maia Sandu stopped after the snap parliamentary elections, when a very difficult period started and there were no favorable conjunctures. The crises came one after another. The pandemic crisis worsened the economic and social situation. As a result, PAS exits the year not only with the victory in the parliamentary elections, but also with problems that seriously affect its image,” stated political commentator Anatol Țăranu.
“The bar was raised very high in this election campaign. I think the government already realized that too many promises can hit the own image and popularity as a boomerang and only particular ways were followed. The geopolitical component appeared and the development direction became clear gradually. But the energy crisis encouraged the representatives of the opposition to attack the government and to shake the boat. The opposition started again to speak about snap parliamentary elections and this generates a feeling of instability. The snap elections predicted by the opposition are in line with the moves made by the Kremlin,” said political commentator Nicolae Negru.
In the snap parliamentary elections of July 11, 2021, the Party of Action and Solidarity won 63 seats of MP, the PCRM-PSRM Bloc – 32 seats, while Șor Party – 6 seats. According to the most recent public opinion polls, if elections were held next Sunday, the same political entities would enter the next Parliament.
