The head of the parliamentary commission for social protection, health and family Liliana Palihovich reiterates the necessity of Moldova ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse signed on October 25, 2007. The issue of child sexual abuse is addressed in the Council of Europe's strategy for 2009-2010 “Protection. Provision and Participation for Children in Europe”. It was discussed at a roundtable meeting organized in Chisinau in concert with the Council of Europe Office in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. Liliana Palihovich stressed that most often the minors in Moldova are subjected to sexual exploitation by one of the members of the family or another minor. Birute Abraitiene, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in Moldova, and Ulvi Akhundlu, program manager of the Democracy Support Program for Moldova, expressed their readiness to provide assistance to the Moldovan legislative body in ratifying this important document. The organizers of the roundtable meeting hope a pan-European campaign to prevent sexual violence against children will be launched in October. The director of the Council of Europe Information Office Lilia Snegureac said the campaign will aim at stopping human trafficking, banning the publication of porn videos on websites, and at raising awareness. “The children must know how to protect themselves from sexual abuse,” Lilia Snegureac said. Daniela Samboteanu, the head of the Nation Center for Child Abuse Prevention, said Moldova might remain without documents that allow jointly solving problems of child abuse and urged the Parliament to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. About 2 million minors are subject to sexual abuse worldwide.
