Palme d’Or-winning director Cristian Mungiu to be special guest at Romanian Film Days

Cristian Mungiu, the first Romanian director to win a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival (2007), will be the special guest of the nineth edition of the Romanian Film Days in Chisinau, to take place from September 21 to 24.

Admission to all films, to be screened at the movie theater Cineplex-Loteanu, will be free.

Mungiu’s latest creation, R.M.N. (2022), will be premiered in Moldova in the opening of the Romanian Film Days. His debut feature “Occident” (2002) and the Golden Palm-awarded “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” (2007) will be also shown.

R.M.N. tells a story about driving forces of human behavior when confronted with the unknown, of the way we perceive the other and on how we relate to an unsettling future.

“4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days” focuses on Otilia and Găbiță, two young women who share a dorm room. They are university colleagues in a Romanian city, during the final years of the communist regime. Otilia rents out a room in a cheap hotel. After dinner, she and Găbiță will meet a certain Mr. Bebe: Găbită gets pregnant, abortion is illegal, and none of them have ever been through something like this before.

“Occident” weaves together three different stories that take place the same week. When Luci and his fiancee Sorina are kicked out of their apartment, the young woman decides it’s time to go to her father’s grave and ask for a “sign”. Luci is hit in the head by a bottle and taken to the hospital by a Frenchman. Despite her love for Luci, Sorina believes a life with security takes precedence over romance, and moves in with the good Samaritan. Another thread follows the story of a young woman and her mother, who are looking for a proper husband. The wealthy Italian man they find has more than a couple of undesirable traits.

Cristian Mungiu will talk to the audience in Chisinau after the screenings of “R.M.N.” and “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”.

The Romanian Film Days will also be held in seven other Moldovan cities: Hâncești (September 21), Nisporeni (September 22), Călărași (September 23), Orhei (September 24), Soroca (September 28), Bălți (September 30 – October 1) and Cahul (October 7-8), where some of the films from the Chisinau selection will be screened.
