Pacifists claim civil service in Moldova is discredited

The chairman of a nongovernmental pacifist rights protection organization says that the civil services in the Republic of Moldova is discredited, Info-Prim Neo reports. Anatolie Gutu, chairman of the association “Pacifists without Border” told a news conference on December 26 that the present legislation on alternative service is good but not efficiently implemented and as a result, the young people that refuse to do their military service or that did not make up their mind yet are intimidated. The cited source said that the young people are induced to renounce the pacifist ideas. Sometimes they are offered bribe. Anatolie Gutu also said that the public authorities avoid informing the young men about the alternative service, invoking that they do not always manage to fulfill the conscription plan. According to the association, about 200 young people opt for the civil service every year. They commit themselves to paying 25% of their salaries to the state budget. The civil service is an alternative service for the Moldovan citizens aged between 18 and 27 that through religious, ethic, moral or other similar convictions cannot do their military service. The civil service is done at the workplace for a period of 12 months. The persons with higher education do only six months of civil service.
