PACE President: Moldova is an example of change

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Jean-Claude Mignon said the Republic of Moldova was an example of change. According to him, the country covered an incredible path towards building a society that respects the democratic values. “I support you without reserve in the integration into the EU,” Jean-Claude Mignon said in his speech delivered in Parliament on December 20, Info-Prim Neo reports. The official said he supports the initiative to review the Constitution and the amendment of Article 78 that refers to the election of the head of state, underlining that the whole expertise of the Council of Europe is at Moldova’s disposal. The PACE President spoke about the Transnistrian conflict, saying that constructive dialogue is needed for settling it. In April, Jean-Claude Mignon visited the Pisari family (whose son was killed by a Russian peacekeeper in January, e.n.) and said that he was astounded by the destructive potential of the frozen conflicts. Another subject to which the PACE official referred was the faith of the TV channel NIT, which was deprived of license. “It is important that any question should be treated in compliance with the law,” he stated. During the sitting, a number of Communist MPs put questions about the condemnation of the Communist symbols. The official said the lawmakers should formulate proposals for the future rather than go into the past. “In the end, I want to say that I would like my visit not to be a simple formality and I would like Moldova to make progress on the path to European integration,” said the official. The PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon has been in Moldova on a visit during December 17-20.
