PACE delegates visit Stati in jail
Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis, members of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly's delegation, attended by Moldova's Prosector General Valeriu Gurbulea, visited Wednesday businessman Gabriel Stati at the Penitentiary no.13 in Chisinau, where Stati has been remanded on charges of power usurpation after the April events, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We also wanted to see Anatol Matasaru, but we were told that he had been freed and placed unde house arrest”, Josette Durrieu told a news conference on Wednesday.
Asked whether the Council of Europe would send experts to analyze the April events, Egidijus Vareikis responded: “We are not in a position to judge, but we can send experts from international organizations like Amnesty International”.
According to Vareikis, Prosecutor Gurbulea promised measures would be taken with regard to the seven persons who are still under arrest following the April events, after the delegation remarked the poor detention conditions in the visited remand center.
A report on the findings of the PACE delegation will be presented to the European parliament by the end of next week.
