Owners of overstayed foreign-plated cars face large fines

The Moldovan citizens who keep their cars on foreign plates more than 90 days of stay in Moldova will be required to pay sizeable fines, under a decision adopted today by Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. Two months ago the legislature annulled the requirement for the Moldovans who work abroad and who return to Moldova for a short vacation driving cars to deposit a security for the cars upon entering the country. But this increases the chances that these cars will never leave Moldova. Veaceslav Ionita, the head of the parliamentary commission responsible for finance and budget matters, further argued that many such cars were imported without any taxes and then sold for spare parts. “Since the citizens break the law and bring cars into the country with any intention of ever driving them out, we though it would be fair to punish them with fines, and additionally require them to pay the tax for those cars”. “The move will not affect in any way the bona fide drivers, who will continue to be spared from taxes upon entering the country”, he added. Also today Parliament decided to institute a tax of 10,000 euros for the import of classic collector cars older than 30 years. Veaceslav Ionita explained this tax would deter imports of scrap metal which often enter the market through the Transnistrian region. Ionita said the tax, which will apply to all 6 existent categories of vintage and classic cars, could be revised after half a year.
