Over half a million dollars seized at frontier posts so far this year

More than half a million dollars, almost €86,000 and 25,000 Ukrainian hryvnias have been seized by the Customs Service since the beginning of this year from persons  who tried to take the money illegally into or out of the country. In 14 cases, the culprits will be held criminally accountable for smuggling, while in 15 cases, these will be fined. The money can be confiscated, IPN reports.

Customs functionary Andrei Moiseev said a private individual can take up to €10,000 out of the country without declaring the amount to the customs authority in written form, but the amount will have to be declared if this is requested by customs inspectors. Or, the person can declare the money optionally if they will need in the future a standard form of the Customs Service to prove the origin of the money. The declaring of money is free of charge.

If the possessed sum is of €10,000 to €50,000, this should be mandatorily declared to custom functionaries. When entering the country, confirmation documents when importing money are not required. When exporting sums of €10,000 to €50,000, the persons, besides the written customs declaration, must also present the standard form, the currency export authorization issued by the National Bank, or the currency export permit issued by an accredited Moldovan bank. If the sum is larger than €50,000, only a bank transfer is permitted.

When entering the country or when leaving it, private individuals can introduce any type of currency, but the sum is calculated according to the exchange rate of the National Bank of Moldova.

If the resident or nonresident private individuals have more than €10,000 on them and don’t declare the amount, but the customs inspectors find the money, the person can be penalized and the money will be seized.
