More than 83% of the respondents of an opinion poll are for the election of the President by direct vote and do not want a head of state chosen by Parliament because they do not trust this institution. The survey was commissioned by the branch in Chisinau of the International Institute of Monitoring Democracy, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage for the IPA CIS Member Nations to the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova, IPN reports.
The respondents said they trust the most the church, followed by the mass media and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The parties and the government are trusted the least. Asked if the Filip Government can improve things, over 50% of those polled said it will rather not manage to do this, while 25% are confident that it will succeed.
Only about 50% of those surveyed know what a referendum is. The others either mixed it up with early elections or didn’t know how to answer. However, 76% of the respondents said they would take part in a future referendum. 91% would answer ‘yes’ to the question about the reduction in the number of MPs, while 83.7% are for the election of the head of state by the people.
Among politicians, Igor Dodon, Andrei Nastase, Renato Usatyi and Maia Sandu enjoy the greatest confidence. If elections to choose the President by direct vote were held next Sunday, Igor Dodon would win them. As to confidence in parties, the Party of Socialists ranks first.
If early parliamentary elections were held, 17% of those interviewed would vote for the Party of Socialists, 14% for the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth”, 13% for the Political Party “Our Party”, 6.8% for the European People’s Party of Moldova, 6.6% for the Democratic Party, 6.1% for the Party of Communists. The other parties would not pass the election threshold. The political project of Maia Sandu wasn’t included in the poll because it hasn’t been yet registered.
If a referendum on Moldova’s entry into the EU or the Eurasian Union was held, 37% of the respondents would vote for accession to the European Union, while over 40% - for entry into the Eurasian Union.
The poll was carried out between February 10 and 21 and covered a sample of 1,195 persons.
