More than 70 trees were downed on the streets of Chisinau in the morning of April 20 following the sleet. In at least five cases, the trees fell onto vehicles parked nearby. A number of trolleybuses got stuck in traffic after massive branches fell onto overhead power lines causing outages.
Contacted by IPN, Eliferie Haruta, head of the Green Areas Association, said the layer of wet snow that formed on the green trees causes these to yield under pressure and many branches have broken. Seven teams of workers with seven special vehicles have dealt with the broken trees. The people are urged not to park under trees as these can fall even if they are young and green.
Director of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company Gheorghe Morgoci has told IPN that the supply of electricity is not working on three addresses – Mateevici St near Vasile Alecsandri St, on Zelinski St and on Vasile Lupu St at the intersection with Coca St. Measures are being taken to remedy the situation. Owing to the elements, the schedule of trolleybuses is not fully respected. Some of the units of transport are diverted to adjoining streets.
Vadim Branzaniuc, chief of the press service of the Chisinau City Hall, stated for IPN that snowplows have spread antiskid material on the streets of the capital city since early morning. The local authorities assure all the streets in Chisinau are passable.
Press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service Diana Turcan said no emergencies related to the bad weather have been reported so far.
According to forecasters, there will be heavy precipitation in the form of sleet and rain - 15-30 l/m2, in parts 35-45 l/m2 – on April 20 and 21. The northeastern wind wil intensify to 22 m/s. The yellow code advisory issued earlier this week was updated.
