More than 70 villages in the country were blocked by the snow. The authorities decided to involve the armed forces to unblock them, acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega said after the January 18 meeting of the Emergencies Commission convoked in connection with the difficult weather conditions, IPN reports.
Gheorghe Brega noted that vehicles with tracks were also engaged in the snow removal works. “There are many pregnant women. I ordered that the pregnant women who are about 10 days before delivery to be hospitalized. Doctors were sent to the communities where there are no district hospitals. Blizzard conditions were forecast for today and tomorrow. The situation is the worst in Stefan Voda district and partially in Causeni. I asked that all the villages should be unblocked by morning because problems can appear like a shortage of bread or drugs,” he said, adding that there is enough equipment and antiskid material to cope with the situation.
Gheorghe Brega expressed his regret at the fact that in Moldova the authorities do not fully ban the movement during such elements as the people can remain blocked in snow and risk becoming frozen. “We took the decision to authorize the Ministry of the Interior to officially ban movement in such situations,” he stated.
More than 20 units of transport were unblocked and towed away from snow today. The rescuers transported five pregnant women to the hospital. They warn the people to call 901 in emergencies.
