Over 66,000 pupils have religion classes in school

Over 6,000 schoolchildren in Chisinau and about 60,000 pupils in other parts of the country attend optional religion courses from October. “This is a large number; we didn't expect such a result”, Deputy Education Minister Tatiana Poting told Info-Prim Neo. Religion is taught in optional classes in 681 out of 1,468 schools in the country. The biggest number of signatures in support of the courses came from Floresti (about 7,000), Glodeni (4,000) and Telenesti (over 3,000). The preparatory courses involved about 500 teachers and 300 priests. “Over 2,000 children who are willing to study religion cannot do this yet for various reasons – the school is in process of finding teachers, it is not yet clear how to fit these courses in the school timetable, or the number of pupils is too small for a teacher to be assigned”, said Viorica Negrei, senior specialist at the Department for Education and Youth. In Chisinau, religion is taught in 36 out of 147 schools and lyceums. The biggest number of signatures came from the lyceums “Mihai Eminescu”, “Gheorghe Asachi” and “Mihai Kogalniceanu”.
