Over 66% of Moldovans intend to participate in referendum

More than 66% of the Moldovan citizens intend to take part in the constitutional referendum on joining the EU on October 20, according to the data of the first opinion poll titled “Citizens’ perception of the European integration of the Republic of Moldova”, which was presented by the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE), in cooperation with CBS-AXA, at a news conference hosted by IPN.



Mihai Mogîldea, IPRE deputy director, said that 65.8% of the respondents are determined to vote “for” in the referendum, while 34.2% would vote “against”.



Also, over 55% of the respondents believe that the Republic of Moldova will become a member of the EU in the next 10 years and 84% are aware of the opening of the EU accession negotiations.

Some 18% of those polled believe that after joining the EU, the level of corruption in the Republic of Moldova will decrease. 17.9% expect that the freedom to travel in the EU will increase, while 13.8% that the medical services will improve.



Among the priority reforms for EU accession, 50.6% of the respondents mentioned the fight against corruption, 33.8% – boosting economic development, and 32.6% – accelerating the justice reform.

In terms of information about the EU, 51.1% of those surveyed said that they are well and very well informed, whereas 48.3% said that they are slightly or not at all informed.

The Internet (55.3%) and television (47.3%) are the information resources most frequently used to follow the latest developments related to the EU.



According to Mihai Mogîldea, the survey was aimed at determining how domestic and international developments in recent years affect citizens’ perceptions of European integration, but also to what extent the actions of the national authorities and development partners influence citizens’ perceptions of the role of European integration in the country’s reformation and modernization.

The survey covered a sample of 1,119 people aged 18 and older, with a margin of error of 2.9%. The data were collected between June 28 and July 18.
