Over 50% of poll respondents consider EU is main development partner

Most of the Moldovans perceive the European Union as the main development partner of the Republic of Moldova, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the most influential person in the European area. At the same time, corruption, salaries, pensions and jobs are the main problems that worry the population, shows the survey “People Watch” carried out by the sociological investigations and marketing center CBS-AXA. The poll was commissioned by the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, IPN reports.

Some 52% of those polled said the EU helps the Republic of Moldova the most. This is followed by Romania with 23%, Russia with 17% and the U.S. with 12.1%. Almost two-thirds of those questioned said the financial resources should be used to develop the economy so that they bring the biggest benefit to the country and the people.

Only 17% of the respondents said the road and bridge repair projects had been implemented in their settlements and almost one third said the financing was provided by the European Union.

The survey shows a worrisome tendency in the country given that 75% of those polled consider the Republic of Moldova follows an incorrect path, while 14% believe the followed path is correct. About 62% of the participants in the survey are very dissatisfied or not at all satisfied with the way in which they live, while 14.3% are satisfied. The poverty level during the last few years decreased so that about 73.6% of those surveyed are close to despair given the meager livelihood, with only 8.2% being satisfied with their level of welfare.

Also, some 54.5% of the respondents do not trust any known Moldovan politician. This is twice more than the rating of the most popular politician. Of the current political figures, Igor Dodon is trusted by 22% of those questioned, being followed by Maia Sandu with 6.2%. The uninominal voting system that is insistently promoted in 2017 is approved of by only one quarter of the survey participants. The party-list proportional representation system is supported by 33.8% of those polled.

The survey “People Watch” that was presented by “Viitorul” on May 4 covered a sample of 1 091 persons. It was conducted during April 7-25 this year. The margin of sampling error is plus-minus 2.8%.
