Over 4,000 children in Chisinau have one or both parents working abroad
More than 4,000 children in Chisinau municipality have one or both parents working abroad, according to the data for the first half of 2008 presented by the municipal children's rights department (DMPDC). In 2007, the department possessed information about 2,958 children whose parents were working abroad, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In the first six months of the year, DMPDC traced and placed under surveillance 197 orphan children or children left without parental care (compared with 434 in 2007), of whom 62 have been placed under guardianship, 21 adopted, 100 institutionalized in public residential establishments, and 11 in alternative establishments.
In January-June, there were 1,051 children in Chisinau who were taken care of in adoptive families, 613 in residential institutions, 222 in non-state temporary placement centers, 132 in the placement and rehabilitation Center for Very Young Children, 102 in the municipal specialized Children's House, and 81 in state-run temporary placement centers. Family-type homes in Moldova are taking care of 10 children (compared with 4 in 2007), and 11 children are looked after by professional parental assistants. 47 youngsters from residential institutions have been reintegrated in their families.
Chisinau's authorities are providing welfare benefits to 954 orphan children and children left without parental care for other reasons.
DMPDC keeps under surveillance 5,258 socially underprivileged families.
