More than 38,000 children were born in Moldova in 2015. Over 51% of these were boys. Thus the ratio of boys to girls was 107:100. The fertility rate in Moldova remains low, 1.3 births per woman, IPN reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics.
Statistics show that the birth rate is higher in rural areas than in urban ones. As to the weight on birth, 94% of the newborns weighed over 2.5 kg. Most of the children were born after over 35 weeks’ pregnancy.
The number of mothers who give birth when being younger than 20 decreased slightly. In 2015, the average age of the mother at the first birth was about 25 years. The mothers from rural areas give birth at an average age of 24.1, as opposed to the average age of 26.5% in the case of mothers from urban areas. Most of the children born in large families are from villages.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the lowest number of newborns last year was recorded in the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti and the districts of Ocnita, Basarabeasca, Cimislia, and Briceni. The highest birth rates were recorded in Ungheni, Falesti, Soldanesti and Criuleni districts.
