The National Clinical Hospital will be able to provide a wide range of surgery services in conditions of maximum safety owing to the new surgical block opened officially on May 6. Due to the modern equipment, about 35,000 patients will be treated in the new surgical block annually, while the number of surgeries will rise from 16,000 to 25,000 a year. The surgical block houses the first hybrid surgery hall in Moldova. It combines the surgical treatment methods and the intervention methods used especially in neurosurgery and in operations on the backbone, heart, nose, neck and ears, IPN reports.
Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the opening of the new surgical block forms part of the series of special events held after the liberalization of the visa regime. “What we see today is the result of a vision and courage. We have here a building that represents more the past and another one that symbolizes vision and courage. I want to thank all those who were able to convince the donors that such a conception is feasible and will bring benefits to the Moldovan citizens. This project involved our friends from Washington, the European Union, up to Japan,” he stated.
Ex-Premier Vlad Filat, who initiated the project to build the new surgical block, said the new building is one more proof that it is possible and that Moldova is able to set ambitious goals and to achieve them. This project shows how foreign investments can be attracted to Moldova. “The most important thing is that the Moldovan doctors in this block will be able to save lives and this is an absolute priority for us,” he stressed.
Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi said that the construction of the new surgical block was the first step towards modernizing the hospital system of Moldova. Now the Moldovan patients will have the chance to receive treatment at home and will not need to go abroad. The treatment of congenital heart diseases of newborns, brain and heart diseases and different types of prostheses became a reality in Moldova too. The new surgical block bloc will allow performing the first heart transplant in Moldova and over 100 hepatic, renal and cornea transplant operations a year.
National Clinical Hospital director general Sergiu Popa said the institution that he manages has very well-trained personnel about whom the whole international community knows. The new block will only help to realize the potential. “We hope to modernize the old block too. The new block includes 16 surgery wards, 75 intensive care beds and modern centralized sterilization. This will enable us to achieve the medical standards to which we aspire. All my colleagues examined the medical equipment and know how a surgery and intensive care hall is outfitted as they were directly involved in this process,” he stated.
Sergiu Popa added that a team of Moldovan specialists were trained to use the modern equipment installed in the new surgical block. The training was organized with the assistance of the government of Austria.
The block started to be built in the spring of 2009. The cost of the project is €26.5 million.
