Over 300 students receive scholarships of US$600 to US$1,500

More than 300 students from families on low incomes will be offered scholarships within the second Additional Scholarships for Young People from Disadvantaged Families Program. The awardees were invited to a festive ceremony at the Palace of the Republic on Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The project is implemented by the Educational Advising Center, with financial support from Soros Foundation Moldova.
“Within the first program, there were chosen 264 students from 18 education institutions. This year, owing to a grant provided by a national banking institution, we increased the number of scholarships to 326, while the total sum rose from US$255,000 to US$285,000,” said the director of the Educational Advising Center Angela Muset.
There are three types of scholarships – of US$600, US$1,000, and US$1,500.
“By this project, we aim to contribute to reducing the unequal access to studies by offering the necessary financial support to young people from deprived families. There will be also organized a series of additional activities that will involve the awardees,” said Angela Muset.
Soros Moldova executive director Victor Ursu said that supporting the young people has always been a priority for the Foundation. “We think that the right to education should not be limited by the financial possibilities of the students, but fueled by their motivation and knowledge. The decision of the Emergency Fund, created by George Soros in 2009, to support the young people from socially unprivileged families to obtain education of a high quality was based on these conditions,” said Victor Ursu.
According to the organizers, 517 first-, second- and third-year students from 20 education institutions took part in the project this year. They were assessed on the basis of a written work and an interview. The selection criteria included the situation of the student and the average grade.
