More than 30 young men with severe mental disabilities this year will be taken out of the boarding schools located in Orhei and Hancesti with the support of the Inclusive Community - Moldova Program that is implemented by the public association Keystone Moldova. Keystone Moldova executive director Ludmila Malcoci said that the environment needed to cope with the educational needs of every child separately was created in 22 national schools. About 100 children are now taught based on a common plan worked out for them. “Owing to these programs, we have young men who no longer need special education programs. We have support teachers who work by one with a child with severe mental disabilities. Evidently, we cannot say that these children will assimilate all the material and will become eminent, but when taking part in different school activities they learn many things,” said Ludmila Malcoci. She gave the example of a hyperactive boy who was taken out of the Orhei boarding school and integrated into an ordinary school, where he became one of the best students at math. “Nobody believed that this child will be able to go to kindergarten. We offered him support through different programs and now he goes to school already. Being hyperactive, he stayed by 3 minutes at the desk and then ran around the school for five times. But we worked with him and now he is like the other children,” said the executive director of Keystone Moldova. There are two institutions intended for children and adults with severe mental disabilities in Moldova. One is situated in Orhei, where there are about 250 boys, and the other one is in Hancesti, where there are over 300 girls. The Inclusive Community - Moldova Program is implemented by Keystone Human Service International Moldova Association in partnership with the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, with financial support from Mental Health Initiative, Open Society Foundations, and Soros Foundation Moldova.
