Over 2,500 people join 38th Reunion of Basarabian Germans Society

Over 2,500 joined the 38th Reunion of the Basarabian Germans Society, which was held on Sunday, June 1, in the German city of Ludwigsburg, Baden Wuerttenberg Land, Info-Prim Neo has learnt from the Moldovan Foreign Ministry. The participants in the reunion are Germans from Moldova and predecessors of the German colonists established here in the first half of the 19th century. The event was joined for the first time by German President, Horst Koehler, whose parents lived in the Moldovan town of Rascani till 1940. Referring to the transformation processes occurring in the countries formerly lived by German colonists, Horst Koehler underlined in his speech that all the efforts need to be made to expand the European community towards the East which shall not lead to new marking lines. “Europe does not end at the Ukrainian borders, or at the Moldovan borders,” he said. The Moldovan ambassador to Germany, Igor Corman, mentioned the importance that Moldova attaches to its relationships with Germany, including within the context of the European integration efforts and of the consolidation of the relationships with the Basarabian Germans Society, which stands as a live bridge connecting the two peoples. The reunion was joined by a Moldovan delegation led by the president of the Rascani district, Vladimir Tabarta and seven people from localities formerly lived by German colonists. Vladimir Tabarta handed President Horst Koehler information on the history of the German settlements in Rascani distrcit.
