Over 200,000 people went to Community Mental Health Centers last year

More than 200,000 people asked for assistance at the 40 Community Mental Health Centers of Moldova in the course of last year. Almost 70,000 people diagnosed with different mental health problems are under the supervision of doctors. The schizoid personality disorder and delirium, anxiety and depressive disorders and stress-related disorders are the most common mental health disorders, IPN reports.

The total figure of 217,477 persons who went to Community Mental Health Centers last year includes the psychiatric examinations with certification for the military commission, the driver’s license, gun permit and others.

Among the most frequent mental health disorders detected and treated at these centers are schizophrenia, schizoid personality disorder and delirium (12,500 cases), neurotic depression and anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders/stress response syndrome (nearly 5,000), dementia (almost 4,000) and mood disorders (3,400).

The World Health Organization defines mental health as ‘a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community’. Social factors that can influence mental health include race, class, gender, religion, family and peer networks. Social institutions such as school, the workplace and labor market, welfare systems and access to health care can make a fundamental difference to wellbeing.
