More than 2,000 tonnes of pesticides are used annually in Moldova. The average use is 1.6 kg/ha, with up to 4.6 kg/ha in some parts of the country. Specialists are concerned that the health of the population could be affected by pesticide overuse, especially by untrained people, IPN reports.
According to the National Agency on Public Health, over the last six years (2016-2021), 655 cases of pesticide poisoning were reported, including 223 in children; and 24 people, including 5 children, died.
The Agency is presenting this information in the context of the Week for promoting rational use of pesticides, during March 21-26.
During the week, various activities – such as public discussions and media events – will be held to raise awareness among the general public of the health risks associated with pesticide overuse.
