More than 2,000 people were saved from fires last year by employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. In total, the firefighters and rescuers carried out almost 25,000 missions in 2024, IPN reports.
The close cooperation with the community was essential and over 800,000 citizens became actively involved in prevention and information campaigns conducted nationwide. These initiatives helped raised public awareness and reduced risks, the authorities noted.
Last year, the Inspectorate designed a map of adaptive protection shelters, which includes locations with public access, which can be used temporarily by citizens in emergency situations.
Rapid and effective intervention measures in cases of drowning were also implemented, which helped save over 300 lives by the end of the previous year.
At the international level, the Republic of Moldova has proven to be a reliable partner in the field of civil protection. National teams were detached to Greece to help extinguish eight major fires, saving three lives, the Inspectorate noted.
In 2025, prevention campaigns to ensure citizens' safety and build confidence in public order institutions will continue. Among the objectives set is also to improve operational capacities, open new firefighting units and outfit them with high-performance equipment.
