Over 200 World War Second munitions discovered by a farmer tilling his plot in the village of Marianca de Jos, Ștefan Vodă district, have been unearthed and destroyed by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad “Codru”.
The Ministry of Defense said the find included 206 artillery shells, 3 mortier shells and 22 payloads, all of German manufacture.
From the beginning of the year, the Squad carried out over 20 missions to dispose of more than 300 explosives in various parts of Moldova.
Since most such finds are made during farmwork, the public is warned not to touch the munitions with their hands or objects and contact the local authorities without delay. Despite their age, such explosives are still are great hazard.
Since 1992, 23 people were killed and 26 others were injured by exploding munitions. The dead and injured include 7 children.
