Over 20 TV and radio stations in Moldova set to organise electoral debates
27 radio and TV stations in Moldova announced the Central Election Commission that they intend to organise electoral debates confronting the candidates who participate in the local general elections of June 3, Iurie Ciocan, the secretary of CEC told a meeting themed “Mass-media in the election campaign”.
Ciocan stressed the fact that several broadcasters plan to organise debates for a given charge, which is prohibited by the legislation. Also, he mentioned that the stations that are willing to organise electoral debates should comply with the legislation and provide equal conditions to all the candidates. The electoral debates can start after all electoral candidates are registered in their districts.
Also, it was announced that 53 broadcasters are willing to provide their services during the electoral campaign, while 4 radio stations (Maestro FM, Sanatatea, Micul Samaritean, Univers FM) and one TV station (Pervyi Kanal – Moldova) announced the electoral watchdog they will not get involved in the campaign.
CEC members specified that each candidate benefits from maximum two minutes a day of paid electoral advertising. The status of electoral candidate is assigned via a decision issued by the District Election Council.
Local general elections will take place on June 3, 2007.
