More than 170,000 people living in the districts of Strășeni and Călărași will have access to high-quality drinking water following the construction of the Chisinau-Strășeni-Călărași water pipeline. For implementing this project, the Government of Germany allocated €15 million in non-reimbursable assistance. To launch the construction works, the responsible authorities on June 5 signed a cooperation agreement, IPN reports, quoting the Government’s press service.
A number of 53 km of water pipes are to be built as part of the project. At the first stage, the pipeline will supply high-quality water to 30,000 inhabitants of Strășeni and Călărași towns. At the second stage, more localities of the two districts will be connected to the pipeline so that 170,000 residents of these districts will gain access to drinking water.
“There is no country in the world that developed without proper infrastructure, namely access to water, sewerage systems, roads and street lighting,” stated Prime Minister Pavel Filip. He thanked the German partners for the provided support and noted that the infrastructure and water supply systems are a priority for the Government.
“I had a personal ambition to see a nationwide master plan, including for the supply of drinking water. This document will be soon finalized and we will have more efficient investments in this important sector. When we clearly know what we want and have these business plans worked out, the financing will not be a problem,” stated Pavel Filip.
The works to build the Chisinau-Strășeni-Călărași water pipeline are to start at the end of 2020. According to the Government’s data, 240,000 people have been connected to drinking water during the past three years. The ensuring of access to water and sewerage services is specified in the Moldova 2030 Strategy by which the executive pledged to make sure 99% of the population has access to high-quality water and 90% to sewerage systems by 2030.
