Over 1,700 persons will be pardoned on 30th anniversary of Independence, final vote

More than 1,700 persons will be pardoned on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the declaring of Independence. The measure covers accused persons and convicts who have positive characteristics and are less likely to reoffend. The pardoning does not apply to those who committed very serious offences and acts of corruption, regardless of their gravity. A relevant bill was given a final reading and was adopted by the MPs, IPN reports.

Of the over 1,700 persons, not all of them will be set free immediately. In some of the cases, the punishment will be shortened and the prisoners will be released before the expected time. For particular categories of offenses, the criminal procedure will stop at the investigation stage or at the trial stage.

A special commission will be constituted to analyze the files of those entitled to pardoning. The National Administration of Penitentiaries will present the list of these persons to the commission.

After being set free, the persons will get a lump sum equal to 75% of the average official salary that this year is 7,953 lei.
