People who developed disabilities in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster receive one-time payouts equivalent to two national average monthly salaries; the participants in the disaster cleanup efforts in the Exclusion Zone in 1986/87 – one national average monthly salary, and those who participated in the cleanup efforts in 1988-1990 – half of an average salary.
The National Social Insurance Company said in a press release that each year participants in the Chernobyl cleanup efforts, also known as liquidators, receive free tickets to sanatoriums for prescribed treatments. If such tickets are not available, a monetary equivalent is offered in lieu.
Families who lost their primary earners because of the Chernobyl disaster receive a lump-sum payout of 15 national average monthly salaries.
People with disabilities directly caused the Chernobyl disaster are offered 759.02 lei each month to buy food, a sum indexed on April 1 by 5.3%. Children who lost their carers receive annually 360 lei.
As of 1 January 2019, people with disabilities directly caused the Chernobyl disaster receive increased monthly pensions. Depending on the severity of the disability, pensions increased by 400 lei, 300 lei, and 200 lei, respectively.
People with disabilities caused by illnesses developed as a result of participating in the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster are entitled to monthly benefits of 700 lei, 550 lei, or 475 lei, depending on the severity.
The 1986/87 liquidators are entitled to old age pensions after they turn 50 in the case of men, and 45 in the case of women, provided a minimum contribution period of 20 years or 15 years, respectively. For the 1988 liquidators, the retirement age and the minimum contribution increases by 5 years for both men and women.
As of April 1, there were 1,733 Chernobyl liquidators receiving pensions, averaging at 3,587 lei.
