Over $10,000 raised to support children seriously injured in domestic accidents
During three weeks after the launch of the Health Ministry’s campaign to collect funds to help the children injured in domestic accidents, the clients of the mobile phone carrier Moldcell donated more than $10,000 by sending an empty SMS or making a call worth 10 lei to the short number 9490. The raised money will be used to cover the costs of operations and treatments for these children, the head of Moldcell’s Corporate Communications Division Rodica Verbeniuc told a news conference on Tuesday.
The fundraising campaign that takes place between August 3 and 31 is part of the nationwide communication campaign “A Home without Dangers for Your Child!” that will last until next spring, Info-Prim Neo reports. Moldcell will contribute $20,000.
Minister of Health Larisa Catrinici said that the children younger than five are most often involved in such domestic accidents as poisonings, burns, scalds and suffocations. The parents are to blame for them as they are inattentive or leave the children without supervision for a long time.
Aurora Dragomisteanu, manager of the Center for Health Policies and Services, which is the project’s partner, said that leaflets with information about domestic dangers will be distributed to kindergartens, schools and families so that the adults acknowledge these risks and do not leave the small children unsupervised.
The campaign is conducted as part of the Moldovan-Swiss project “Regionalization of Emergency Pediatric and Intensive Therapy Services in Moldova”, which is implemented with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
According to the National Center for Health Management, 46,957 children were injured in accidents in 2008. 40,614 children of them were involved in domestic accidents. 194 children died in accidents in Moldova last year, 66 out of whom younger than five. 64 of them, 38 of whom aged between 0 and 5, died in domestic accidents.
