Over 1 million lei stolen through fake credit cards

Two young men from Chisinau were convicted of stealing over 1 million lei from the accounts of a number of banks from the U.S., Brazil, Ukraine and other countries. According to the police, the two students stole money using fake credit cards, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the young men, using information technologies to copy and store personal data of card holders, forged over 1,000 credit cards and put them into circulation. Most of the cards belonged to U.S. commercial banks. In April – May 2013, using these cards, the students stole about 1.2 million lei. The other attempts by the two to steal approximately 2 million lei failed.

As a result of the searches performed in four apartments of the culprits, the police found the lab where the bank cards were forged and foreign currencies in cash. The two men aged 22 and 23 stood trial earlier too.

The students got nine years and six month and, respectively, eight years for credit card fraud, theft attempts and putting of forged cards into circulation. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
