Other-language speaking students will study one of subjects in Romanian

The other-language speaking students from September 1 will be able to study a subject of their choice in the Romanian language within a Ministry of Education project implemented in concert with the National Association of European Trainers of Moldova (ANTEM), Info-Prim Neo reports. Deputy Minister of Education Tatiana Potang told a news conference that 12 teachers of schools for other-language speakers have been so far selected for participation in training courses that will take place in July-August. The teachers are from the municipality of Balti and the districts of Cahul, Comrat, Glodeni, and Orhei. “By teaching a school subject in Romanian, we extend the area where the Romanian language is used,” said the deputy minister. During the school year, there will be organized linguistic meetings, trips, cultural meetings where the other-language speaking students will communicate only in Romanian. Tatiana Potang expressed her optimism about the results that will be achieved within the project. “I hope the results will be good. It was them who asked studying in Romanian,” she stated. The teachers will be trained by ANTEM. The teaching aids include books, notebooks with answers, CDs and illustrative materials. ANTEM director Lucia Cucu said other-language speaking civil servants continue to learn Romanian. Over 700 applications came from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. At the end of the courses, the civil servants will take a test similar to the English language test TOEFL. The Romanian language teaching program was launched by ANTEM at the Government’s request, with financial support from the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in 2005. More than 1,500 students have completed Romanian language courses since then.
